Apprentice Life

 

Can I work while completing the apprenticeship?

Many apprentices successfully balance work, family, and their apprenticeship. Our schedule is intentionally designed to provide consistency while allowing flexibility whenever possible. We encourage each applicant to carefully consider their personal commitments and discuss any scheduling concerns with us during the enrollment process.

What does a typical week look like?

Apprentices participate in classroom instruction, hands-on practice, and supervised clinical experience throughout the week. Depending on your apprenticeship pathway, portions of the curriculum may also be completed through asynchronous online learning, allowing additional flexibility outside the classroom.

Do you bring in guest speakers?

Yes. In addition to learning alongside Certified Mentors, apprentices benefit from guest speakers who are experts in their specific techniques and approaches. These professionals are respected within the massage and bodywork community and offer valuable insight drawn from real-world experience.

Guest speakers allow apprentices to explore a variety of perspectives while maintaining the consistency of our apprenticeship model. This balance ensures that apprentices receive both a strong foundational education and exposure to diverse methods and philosophies within the profession.

What are the physical demands of massage therapy?

Massage therapy is a physically demanding profession that requires strength, endurance, body awareness, and proper technique. Apprentices must be able to safely and consistently perform the essential physical components of training and practice.

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, prolonged standing, repetitive upper body movements, sustained application of pressure, maintaining proper professional body mechanics, lifting and moving equipment, bending, kneeling, reaching, and maintaining the physical stamina necessary to complete hands-on training and client sessions.

Throughout the apprenticeship, Certified Mentors guide apprentices in developing sustainable habits, including posture, movement, and self-care practices. Participation in hands-on training may result in physical fatigue, muscle soreness, or aggravation of pre-existing conditions. Apprentices are encouraged to carefully consider their own physical health, endurance, strength, and overall ability to meet the demands of the Program.

What's the difference between an apprenticeship and mentorship?

While the terms are closely connected, they describe two different aspects of our educational philosophy.

An apprenticeship is the educational pathway approved by the Missouri State Board of Therapeutic Massage. Because our program is registered as an apprenticeship, individuals enrolled in the program are officially referred to as apprentices. The apprenticeship provides the structure of your education, combining classroom instruction, hands-on learning, supervised clinical experience, and preparation for state licensure.

 

Mentorship, on the other hand, is how that education comes to life.

At Integrative Institute of Massage & Bodywork, collaborative mentorship is woven throughout every aspect of the apprenticeship. Amanda and Tara serve together as a team of Certified Mentors, combining their knowledge, experience, and passion for education to support every apprentice's growth. Through classroom instruction, hands-on learning, and supervised clinical experiences, apprentices receive ongoing guidance, meaningful feedback, and encouragement in a collaborative learning environment.
